Day 1: Fez – Ifrane – Monkey Forest – Erfoud – Merzouga Desert

The first highlight is Ifrane, a town at an altitude of over 1,700 meters in the heart of the Middle Atlas. Its distinctive mountain appearance, cleanliness, and houses with gable roofs create a unique setting. After a brief exploration of the town, we enter Ifrane National Park, also known as the Cedar Forest or the Forest of the Monkeys. This expansive area is home to a large population of Barbary macaques, thriving in one of the few natural habitats north of the Sahara. The park’s lush cedar trees provide a unique environment for these primates, making it a remarkable destination for wildlife enthusiasts.

Descending through the Middle Atlas, we traverse the Ziz Valley, named after the humble yet long river that shapes it. The transition from greenery to the Moroccan desert becomes evident as we reach Erfoud, renowned for fossils, including those of large dinosaurs, and marble production. Erfoud has also been featured in films with a desert ambiance, such as “The Mummy.”

Continuing our journey from Erfoud, the final leg takes us to Merzouga, where we switch from motor vehicles to traditional camels (optionally replaceable by 4×4). This marks our entry into the mesmerizing dunes of Erg Chebbi, their golden sands captivating our view.

The day concludes at a tented camp, where Berber tea is served according to tradition, and dinner is a unique experience within these traditional tents. Under the starry sky, unobstructed by clouds and artificial lighting, you’ll rest in these traditional tents, experiencing the enchantment of the desert night.

Day 2: Merzouga Desert – Fez

Following breakfast, you have the option of returning to Merzouga either by camel ride or 4×4, depending on your preference.
