6-Day Ouarzazate to M’Hamid & Erg Chigaga Sahara Journey
Ouarzazate → Agdz → Drâa Valley → Zagora → Tamegroute → M’Hamid → Erg Chigaga → Iriki → Foum Zguid → Taznakht → Agdz → Ouarzazate
Travel beyond Morocco’s classic desert routes on a private six-day journey through the Drâa Valley, M’Hamid and the remote Erg Chigaga dunes, with 4×4 desert crossings, a sunset camel ride and a night beneath the Sahara sky.
Into Morocco’s Wild Sahara
Discover the more remote side of southern Morocco on this 6-day Ouarzazate to Erg Chigaga desert tour, following the Drâa Valley through Zagora and Tamegroute before reaching M’Hamid El Ghizlane and the open Sahara.
From M’Hamid, leave the paved roads behind for a private 4×4 Sahara adventure to Erg Chigaga. Cross remote desert tracks, experience the great dunes at sunset on camelback, and spend the night in a desert camp beneath the stars.
The journey continues across the Iriki landscapes toward Foum Zguid before returning at a more relaxed pace through Taznakht and Agdz to Ouarzazate, creating a complete private Sahara circuit rather than a simple out-and-back desert transfer.
Day by Day Itinerary
Six days through palm oases, historic desert villages, remote Sahara tracks and the great dunes of Erg Chigaga.
Ouarzazate → Anti-Atlas → Agdz → Drâa Valley → Zagora
Your private Sahara journey begins in Ouarzazate, with pickup from your hotel, riad or Ouarzazate Airport.
Travel south across the dramatic landscapes of the Anti-Atlas Mountains toward Agdz, where the scenery opens into the magnificent Drâa Valley.
Take time to discover Agdz and enjoy panoramic views over the vast palm oasis before following the historic valley south. Along the way, traditional earthen villages, kasbahs and palm groves reveal a quieter side of southern Morocco.
Enjoy scenic stops and time to experience the landscapes before continuing to Zagora, historically connected with the great trans-Saharan caravan routes.
Zagora → Tamegroute → Drâa Valley → M’Hamid El Ghizlane
After breakfast, continue deeper into southern Morocco through the lower Drâa Valley, where palm groves gradually give way to increasingly arid desert landscapes.
Stop in Tamegroute, a historic settlement known for its cultural heritage and distinctive traditional pottery. Visit local pottery workshops when available and discover the craftsmanship passed through generations.
Continue south through desert villages toward M’Hamid El Ghizlane, one of the last settlements before the paved road gives way to the open Sahara.
Rather than rushing directly to Erg Chigaga, spend the night in M’Hamid and experience the atmosphere of Morocco’s desert frontier. Depending on your arrival time, enjoy a walk around the village or nearby desert landscapes before sunset.
M’Hamid → Sahara 4×4 Adventure → Sacred Oasis → Erg Chigaga
After breakfast, leave M’Hamid and the paved roads behind as your journey enters the wild Sahara.
Travel by private 4×4 across remote desert tracks, passing rocky plains, dry river landscapes and vast open spaces. Depending on desert conditions, stop around the Sacred Oasis and other scenic locations along the route.
As you travel farther from the villages, the sense of isolation grows until the great dunes of Erg Chigaga appear on the horizon.
Arrive with time to settle into the desert surroundings before one of the highlights of the journey.
Toward evening, meet your camel caravan for a sunset camel ride across the Erg Chigaga dunes. Watch the colors of the Sahara change as the sun disappears behind the dunes before returning to camp.
Enjoy dinner in the desert, traditional music around the campfire when available, and the extraordinary silence of a night beneath the Sahara sky.
Erg Chigaga → Iriki Desert Crossing → Foum Zguid
Wake early for the opportunity to watch sunrise over Erg Chigaga, when the first light transforms the dunes and surrounding desert.
After breakfast, continue your 4×4 adventure rather than returning through M’Hamid.
Cross the remote desert terrain toward the Iriki landscapes, traveling through wide plains and changing Sahara scenery on one of the most adventurous sections of the journey.
The off-road crossing eventually reaches Foum Zguid, where the desert tracks meet the paved road again.
After several days deep in the Sahara, the afternoon is intentionally kept more relaxed. Settle into your accommodation and enjoy the slower rhythm of this southern desert town.
Foum Zguid → Taznakht → Anti-Atlas → Agdz
After breakfast, leave Foum Zguid and travel through the changing landscapes of southern Morocco toward Taznakht.
Known for its Amazigh weaving and carpet traditions, Taznakht offers another glimpse into the culture and craftsmanship of the south.
Continue through the Anti-Atlas landscapes toward Agdz, with scenic stops along the way.
Arriving back in the Drâa Valley brings a striking change after the open Sahara. Palm groves, cultivated gardens and traditional earthen architecture once again fill the landscape.
Enjoy the remainder of the day at a relaxed pace around Agdz and the Drâa Valley.
Agdz → Drâa Valley → Anti-Atlas → Ouarzazate
Enjoy a relaxed final breakfast surrounded by the landscapes of the Drâa Valley.
Depending on timing, there is an opportunity for a final walk or scenic stop around the oasis before beginning the journey north.
Travel across the Anti-Atlas Mountains, stopping for panoramic views as the road climbs away from the valley.
Arrive back in Ouarzazate, completing a six-day private circuit through some of southern Morocco’s most distinctive landscapes.
Your driver will drop you at your hotel, riad or Ouarzazate Airport.
